Wheelabrator-Sherman Energy Company

Wheelabrator cogeneration facility

Wheelabrator-Sherman Energy Company is a partnership between an affiliate of Wheelabrator Environmental Systems, Inc. and Sherman Power Company formed to operate the Wheelabrator cogeneration facility.  The 18 MW (net) plant, located in Sherman Station, Maine processes approximately 260,000 tons per year of mill wastes and forest residues from parts of Aroostook and Penobscot Counties, supplies approximately 130 million kWh of electricity to Maine Public Service Company (MPS) and process steam to Sherman Lumber Company.  The facility will continue delivering electricity to MPS through December 2006.

The plant includes a state-of-the-art low emissions wood-fired traveling grate furnace with a utility-type high-pressure boiler.  The plant also includes a fully automated woodyard, a modern air pollution control system, an air-cooled condenser and an extraction-condensing turbine generator.  The air-cooled condenser and other unique design features allow plant operation with no (zero) wastewater discharge.

The facility has been operational since June 1986, has a complement of 25 employees and has consistently achieved turbine generator availability in excess of 93%.
